The recent release of Google Bard has sparked a fascinating new chapter in the AI race. As this new entrant flexes its capabilities, it has emerged as a formidable contender to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Although ChatGPT has held its ground as a leading conversational AI, the unique features of Google Bard appear to be giving it a competitive edge. In this article, we delve into a comprehensive review of these two AI models, spotlighting their strengths, unique features, and performance in various tasks.
Spoiler: Bard outperforms ChatGPT on many (but not all) measurements.
Things that Bard can do that ChatGPT cannot
There are a number of things that Bard can do that ChatGPT simply cannot. Here are some of the unique features that distinguish Bard from ChatGPT.
1. Export outputs to a Google Doc or Gmail draft
6. Export and Collaboration

Unlike ChatGPT, Bard makes it easy to export. You can export into documents or send via Gmail.

2. Speedy website and article summarization
3. Generate several outputs at one time
8. Multiple Drafts

Comparing Bard and ChatGPT’s responses
Moritz Kremb did a side-by-side comparison of Bard and ChatGPT to compare the responses from both models. Here are the results.
ChatGPT is in big trouble.
— Moritz Kremb (@moritzkremb) May 13, 2023
I did a side-by-side comparison between Bard and ChatGPT.
From brainstorming, to writing, to coding.
Result: Google's Bard came out on top 🧵
1. Getting the latest information
Winner: Bard
Why? Bard provided a better summary of the news. ChatGPT spent a long time retrieving the information.
2. Speed
Winner: Bard
Why? Bard is the clear winner here, taking just 7 seconds, while ChatGPT took over 2 minutes and didn’t actually even finish the task.
3. Brainstorming
Winner: Bard
Why? This one was close. ChatGPT was judged by Moritz to have generated more ‘innovative’ ideas, but the ideas generated by Bard were much more likely to succeed.
4. User interface
Winner: Bard
Why? Moritz judged Bard to have a better user interface. He believes the design looks cleaner and Bard has additional features like voice search, citation and further search. A credible mention went to ChatGPT’s multiple chat threads.
5. Writing
Winner: ChatGPT
Why? The ChatGPT story in this example is much more intricate, detailed and just better written.
6. Social media posts
Winner: ChatGPT
Why? While both models didn’t do a great job, at least ChatGPT attempted to write a Twitter thread.
7. Summarizing Text
Winner: Tied
Why? Both summaries are good.
8. Hallucinating
Winner: ChatGPT
Why? Bard tends to hallucinate more. When Bard was asked if you can cycle from San Fransisco to Paris in the example below, it fails to mention you can’t cross an ocean on a bike.
9. Coding
Winner: Tied
Why? Both did a good job at a simple programming task.
So, which is better?
With both models in their infancy, the competence, accuracy and speed of both Bard and ChatGPT changes by the week.
For now, it seems ChatGPT is better at writing and performing creative tasks. Bard, on the other hand, is better at quickly finding current information on the internet and summarizing it. However, Bard is more prone to hallucinating and providing false information.
