The highly anticipated ChatGPT Code Interpreter Plugin is finally being rolled out.
From all the crazy ChatGPT plugin announcements we’ve had, this one feels a little different. The Code Interpreter plugin could be huge.
In this article, we’ll explain:
- What the ChatGPT Code Interpreter plugin is.
- How to set it up the Code Interpreter on your ChatGPT account.
- (Here’s the fun part) 10 incredible ways it is already being used.
What is the ChatGPT Code Interpreter plugin?
This powerful plugin provides ChatGPT with a working Python interpreter in a sandboxed, firewalled execution environment, enabling the AI to handle uploads and downloads, solve mathematical problems, perform data analysis, and convert files between formats.
In short, the Code Interpreter plugin allows anyone to access the power of AI-powered programming (no coding experience required).
It’s like having an additional junior programmer on your team… but they respond immediately and cost $20 per month.
This groundbreaking tool opens up the benefits of programming to people (like me) who are unfamiliar and inexperienced with programming languages.
How to Turn On ChatGPT Code Interpreter
The Code Interpreter does not immediately show up… you have to turn it on yourself.
1. Go to your settings at the bottom-left of your page.
2. Click on beta features and then toggle on Code Interpreter.
10 Ways to Use the ChatGPT Code Interpreter Plugin
In no particular order, here are some of the crazy things you can do with Code Interpreter.
1. Basic video editing
You can edit videos with simple prompts like adding slow zoom or panning to a still image. Example prompt: “Covert this GIF file into a 5 second MP4 file with slow zoom.”

2. Data analysis
Code Interpreter can read, visualize and graph data in seconds. Upload any data set by using the “+” button on the left of the text box. Example prompt: “Analyze my favorites playlist in Spotify.”

3. Convert files
You can convert files directly inside ChatGPT. Example prompt: “Using the lighthouse data from the CSV file in into a Gif.”
This was kind of delightful: I uploaded a CSV file of every lighthouse location in the US.

"ChatGPT Code Interpreter: Create a gif of a map of the lighthouse locations, where the map is very dark but each lighthouse twinkles." A couple seconds later... pic.twitter.com/f14JLWQCyB
4. Turn images into videos
Use Code Interpreter to turn still images into videos. Example prompt: “Turn this still image into a video with an aspect ratio of 3:2 will panning from left to right.”

6. Generate QR codes
You can generate a completely functioning QR in seconds. Example prompt: “Create a QR code for Reddit.com and show it to me.”
Code Interpreter will be available to all ChatGPT Plus users over the next week.
— OpenAI (@OpenAI) July 6, 2023
It lets ChatGPT run code, optionally with access to files you've uploaded. You can ask ChatGPT to analyze data, create charts, edit files, perform math, etc.

It’s great to analyze spreadsheets, images, charts, and more
Here’s an example where I used it to analyze AAPL’s options expiring July 21st 👇
8. Summarize PDF documents
Code Interpreter can analyze and output an in-depth summary of an entire PDF document. Be sure not to go over the token limit (8k). Example prompt: “Conduct casual analysis on this PDF and organize information in clear manner.”
I am regularly impressed by how much statistical common sense ChatGPT with Code Interpreter has.
— Ethan Mollick (@emollick) July 5, 2023
I can just throw unformatted data from a PDF into it and ask it to an analysis, and it figures out the table layout, restructures formats, runs models, & "reasons" about the results. pic.twitter.com/hFcYJMAp2o
9. Graph public data
Code Interpreter can extract data from public databases and convert them into a visual chart. Example prompt: “Graph the top 10 countries by nominal GDP.”
6. Graph public data without input
— Aakash Gupta 🚀 Product Growth Guy (@aakashg0) July 7, 2023
It can fetch data from public databases like the IMF and visualize it for you without any work.
This used to be a process of finding data, loading into your software, then formatting the chart. All is now done for you.

10. Graph mathematical functions
The Code Interpreter plugin can even solve a variety of different math problems. Example prompt: “Plot function 1/sin(x)”
3. Plot Mathematical Functions
— Aadit Sheth (@aaditsh) July 7, 2023
You used to go into a math tool, define all the elements of the formula, and then create the plot.
Code Interpreter will make assumptions about the formula and plot it without any guidance.
