Kevin Lin, the co-founder of Twitch, has raised $24 million for his Web3 gaming company Metatheory.
As of now, the company’s in-development ‘DuskBreakers’ serves as its flagship product, as it aims to be an all-encompassing sci-fi franchise which spans across NFTs, games and comics (with two mini games and DuskBreakers character NFTs currently in the making).
The round was led by Andreesen Horowitz of a16z, with participation also coming from Pantera Capital, FTX Ventures, Dragonfly Capital and others.
After stepping away from Twitch after revolutionising the live-streaming game, Lin believes Web3 opens more doors for him to make further major impacts within the future realms of gaming, storytelling and community building. Intuitively, he has also recruited former Twitch colleagues of his to help manifest Metatheory’s Web3 vision, with former Twitch developer relations executive and engineer JT Gleason to serve as CTO, and Jason Maestas from Twitch’s Influencer Marketing team coming in as Vice President of Community and Marketing.
In addition, Bernie Su and Jen Enfield-Kane, who will respectively serve as the Content Chief and Narrative Designer for Metatheory, have been onboarded from Twitch’s exclusive series ‘Artificial Next’ – an interactive livestreamed show about AI which ran for four seasons.
