After raising $104 million earlier this year and a disastrous NFT art reveal that crashed the floor price, Pixelmon is on a mission to revive its reputation by updating its artwork.
After the Pixelmon ‘Generation 1’ collection sold out via Dutch auction at 3 ETH, a disastrous art reveal caused many collectors to lose thousands of dollars as the floor price plunged. The disappointing, Microsoft Paint-esque art was revealed to be nothing like the concept art which was advertised and promised to holders.
According to the project, updates of Pixelmon character artworks have been showcased across the project’s Discord channel over the past month. However, the new style has now been revealed to the public via updates on Twitter.

Although certainly enhanced through upgraded 3D graphics and more dynamic movements, the new artwork is not exactly of the ‘pixelated’ aesthetic. This diversion from the pixel art roots has been met with feelings of FUD in the community, and doubts about the future prospects of the project remain.
In a ‘Twitter Spaces’ meeting on Friday, where hundreds of participants attended, Pixelmon explained that the new artwork is a product of designers who were onboarded to the project after a ‘very length process’ of recruitment. In addition, representatives of the project stated that a new CEO and other team members will be announced at the end of the month, as well as a new project roadmap.
Overall, the Pixelmon debacle has highlighted the good and bad of the NFT industry. Firstly, its inaccurate art reveal demonstrated the vulnerability of NFT collectors, and the prevalent irresponsible use of hype and FOMO-tactics in NFT project marketing. Conversely, the project’s decision to upgrade its artwork amid community backlash demonstrates the relentless power of communities which can be achieved when in full unity
