What is MemeLand?
MemeLand is 9GAG’s first NFT collection. 9GAG was founded in 2008 and is an online platform and social media website based in Hong Kong. 9GAG allows users to upload and share user-generated content or other content from external social media websites. 9GAG states that it is “the largest meme community on the internet”. Across all social media platforms, they have a global audience of 200 million followers.
MemeLand is not going to be “just a JPEG”. The project is going to consist of 9,999 captains, with their pirate crews exploring the Broken Sea in search of the worlds legendary treasure island known as the MemeLand.
Story / Background
There is little to no information available on how MemeLand became to be. Given the emerging popularity of NFTs and Web3 as a whole, it is only a matter of time before Web2 organizations and brands cross the bridge into Web3. As more and more establishments recognise the potential that NFTs have, it is likely that we will see more entering the space.
As 9GAG is already digitally based, creating a NFT only seems like a natural extension to their existing brand. It appears that MemeLand will be “everything Meme”, including their own currency and governance token, $MEME. Its website states that “meme is love, meme is life”, and reinforces this by explaining that $MEME will sit at the core of everything in the MemeLand Metaverse.
Utility
The collection will consist of utility-enabling profile pictures which will grant membership to private clubs, access to an exclusive NFT marketplace, in real life events, future 9GAG project drops and more.
By holding a MemeLand NFT (captain), holders will yield $MEME every day. $MEME can also be earnt through staking, actively playing or creating content. $MEME is a token made to support the creator economy.
Roadmap
MemeLands website states that there is “no road at sea”, meaning that there is no roadmap. However, their mission is to empower creators by connecting Web2 and Web3 communities. In alignment with all things 9GAG, it wants to underpromise and overdeliver. MemeLand flex 9GAGs 14 year track record in community building and social media as their testimonial.
Team
The powerhouse team behind MemeLand is the real selling point. Not only do we have 9GAGs original team – who are proven to be able to build a behemoth digital brand – we also see an absolutely stacked team of advisors and investors. It could be argued that MemeLand has some of the most experienced lists of legendary ‘players’ backing them.
Founder
The founder of MemeLand goes by the name 9gagceo on Twitter. If we search for 9GAG CEO on Google, we find a man named Ray Chan. The brand that he has built and his net worth is testimonial to himself. He has gained a huge following of 303.6k on Twitter and 31.3k on Instagram. Upon doing a little digging and finding his OpenSea vault, it appears that he is an avid NFT collector too. It’s safe to say this project is in good hands.
Advisor
The latest advisor to join the Memeland team is Adrian Cheng who is a wealthy investor from Hong Kong who is also the CEO of New World Development, the founder of K11 brand, C Ventures, and Eureka Nova. He’s an early investor in Castify, ConsenSys, RTFKT, The Sandbox, and more.
There are too many advisors and investors to cover, but this list of people is incredible. Most notable is probably Gary Vee who is a legendary entrepreneur and NFT investor. It is easy to see why MemeLand has built so much hype in such a short amount of time.
Collaborations
A project of MemeLands caliber would be able to collaborate and partner up with almost any other collection with its staggering 343.5k followers. However, this does not mean that it should do so in order to inflate its following count even more. MemeLand have participated in several collaborations in the form of Whitelist giveaways, but it appears that they have carefully selected who they have collaborated with. Browsing through Twitter, we can see raffle giveaways with the likes of artFT, Trait Sniper, Ape List and Troverse. All of these projects boast more than 125k followers on Twitter, which suggests that MemeLand only collaborates with those proven and reputable projects to enjoy mutually beneficial gains.
Aside from these collaborations, MemeLand has offered plenty of other Whitelist giveaway raffles on their Twitter. These other giveaways have been with the project’s founder, 9gagceo. This is likely to buffer his own personal Twitter account so it grows alongside Memeland.
Analysis
Bullish case
Given the history of 9GAG and its success, in combination with the absolutely stacked team, the WGMI team is very bullish on MemeLand. Browsing through MemeLand’s Twitter page, it is evident that it is not only us who are bullish on the project. Each post has very high levels of engagement, including retweets. MemeLand is certainly one that is expected to do very well.
The Memeland team recently released their latest collection called The Potatoz which was a free-to-mint project which acts as an access pass to the Memeland ecosystem. The current floor price of The Potatoz sits at 0.76 ETH after more than six days after its launch which is a good indicator of the strength behind the Memeland community.
Reservations
As of now, there are very few to no reservations with regards to MemeLand. It has all the ingredients to be a highly successful project. We all know the power of an influencer shill, and MemeLand has many influencers behind it. The only external concern that may prove to be an issue is the market sentiment during the team of their launch, and the final mint price that the team decides on.
