eBay has dropped an NFT collection based on NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, marking the e-commerce powerhouse’s first official foray into NFTs. To facilitate the launch, eBay teamed up with climate-conscious NFT platform OneOf, which opted for the NFTs to reside on Ethereum scaling platform Polygon.
The collection depicts different animated versions of Gretsky which are inspired by the star’s appearances on the covers of Sports Illustrated magazine. The NFTs themselves come in four different tiers of rarity and supply amounts, including Green (299 editions), Gold (199 editions), Platinum (99 editions) and Diamond (15 editions).
The NFTs dropped yesterday, and are still available to be purchase on eBay’s marketplace now, however those in Diamond, Platinum and Gold tiers have already sold out.
That being said, eBay hasn’t actually integrated blockchain technology to support NFT sales on its marketplace. Instead, purchasers will receive a ‘redemption link’ which they can then use to redeem their NFT outside of the platform. Upon making a purchase, the NFTs can be resold on OneOf’s NFT marketplace.
