In collaboration with football freestyle word champion Séan Garnier, holistic sports apparel and equipment retailer Decathlon is launching its first ever NFT collection.
In a nod to Garnier’s triumph at the Red Bull Street Style World Championships in 2008, the ‘Kipsta’ NFT collection will be limited to 2,008 digital assets. In harmony with the nature of street football (or soccer), the collection comes with special flair that only permits NFT ownership to those who purchase a pair of limited edition Decathlon x Séan Garnier trainers.
The trainers come in a pale grey (£54.99), grey and red (£39.99), or classic black (£39.99) aesthetic, and are purpose built for street use through their revolutionary ‘rub-last uppers’ which offer a unique sense of control and durability. Their NFT counterparts are entitled ‘Kipsta Golden Tickets,’ which will grant holders with access to exclusive, football-related experiences with the free-styling champ.
In jumping onboard the NFT hype train, Decathlon joins a long list of other mainstream sports brands leveraging Tezos’ eco-friendly blockchain to begin their Web3 adventure. F1 racing teams McLaren and Red Bull have also looked into Tezos for building fan engagement, while Manchester United currently brandish the Tezos logo all over their training wear. Despite this launch being relatively small, the French-founded company plan to utilise the Tezos blockchain in the future, in order to bring a mass NFT collection to its sports fanatic consumer base.
